This past Saturday, Ebony and I had the privilege to attend Girl Talk Foundation’s 3rd Annual “Pass the Purse” Empowerment tea; held at the Ritz Carlton uptown Charlotte. Sponsored by Wells Fargo as well as partnering sponsors Fifth Third Bank and BB&T; this high tea event featured well-respected women in the Charlotte area community who are paired with a Girl Talk Jewel. Girl Talk Jewels are young ladies who have successfully completed Girl Talk’s vigorous 16-week curriculum “Tailoring Teens for Success.”
This year’s community figures were: Dr. Maha Gingrich (Assistant to the Public Information Office, CPCC), Felicia Hall (Attorney, Sports Agent and President of Felicia Hall & Associates), Jenene Seymour (BP of Operations, NIA Construction), Molly Shaw (Executive Director, Communities in Schools of Charlotte Mecklenburg County Schools), Phyllis Morey, VP and Deputy Counsel, Ingersoll Rand) and Tanya Blackmon, President, Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center). Each woman provided inspirational teaching tools to their “jewel” via a purse and I must say that the entire event was absolutely phenomenal! The event was filled with women from all walks of life and professional backgrounds. From news anchors to county commissioners to retired school teachers; all were gathered for the common cause of celebrating education and success of these young women.
One of my favorite aspects of the tea were the display of vision boards created by each “jewel”. The vision boards allowed you to get a glimpse into the personality of the girls, what drives them and some of the goals they have in life.
The entire event was full of overwhelming positivity, love and support. Janine Davis is to be applauded for her hard work and commitment to make a difference; not only in the lives of young women but also in the community as a whole.
